UK First: Really exciting news that we got an ID match between one of the Humpback Whales I photographed here in Shetland earlier in the winter and Gaudaloupe, Caribbean- Over 4,500 miles away!! This is first ever match from the UK to breeding ground. A fantastic international collaboration helped by Irish Whale and Dolphin Group, North Norwegian Humpback Whale Catalogue, North Atlantic Humpback Whale Catalogue (who made the match from their database of 9,000 tail fluke images!) and the OMMAG project in Caribbean. Full story on our blog www.shetlandnature.net/2017/02/15/a-humpback-id-match-uk-first-caribbean-shetland-islands/ There is also a feature on this and Richard Shucksmith Photography underwater images in BBC Wildlife Magazine this month- out today.
